The K-12 zones get all the attention, but for a family moving here with a two-year-old, the harder question is the one nobody publishes: where does she go before kindergarten? Every provider below was verified September 18, 2026 — and the free state program most new arrivals don’t know about comes first.

Start here: VPK is free, for everyone

Florida’s Voluntary Prekindergarten gives every child who lives in Florida and turns 4 on or before September 1 a free pre-K year — 540 instructional hours in the school-year program, or 300 in the summer model — no income test. For the 2026–27 year, that’s children born September 2, 2021 through September 1, 2022. Families of children who turn 5 between February 2 and September 1 can defer a year.

Enrollment runs through the state Family Portal (familyservices.floridaearlylearning.com): apply, receive a certificate of eligibility, take it to a participating provider. The program here is administered by the Early Learning Coalition of North Florida (2450 Old Moultrie Rd, Suite 103, St. Augustine), with family services through Episcopal Children’s Services.

And the part that surprises relocating parents most: the school district itself runs free VPK classrooms inside its elementary schools — 18 campuses across the county, listed under each zone below. If your child will attend that elementary anyway, district VPK is the no-cost, same-building on-ramp.

How to vet any provider (we don’t rate — you verify)

We list programs and attributes, never rankings — same policy as our K-12 pages. Two official tools do the vetting: Florida DCF’s provider search shows any licensed facility’s license number, capacity, and inspection reports (some faith-based programs are lawfully license-exempt — ask those about accreditation instead), and Gold Seal Quality Care is the state designation for providers holding approved national accreditation.

The part nobody tells you

In the fastest-growing county in the region, the constraint isn’t finding a preschool — it’s finding a seat. Subsidized School Readiness slots carry a waitlist when funding runs out, and regional reporting puts Jacksonville-area child care at roughly $1,000–$2,400 a month — a mortgage-sized line item nobody puts in the relocation spreadsheet. The move almost no one makes: run the DCF license lookup and start the enrollment conversation while you’re still touring homes, not after you close. Sales offices talk about the K-8 opening down the road; they don’t mention the infant-room waitlist across from it.

The district runs free VPK classrooms inside its elementary schools — degreed teachers, school-day structure, and a natural on-ramp to the school your child may attend for kindergarten. Private providers wrap VPK inside longer daycare hours, which working parents often need. Both use the same state eligibility certificate.

How do I check a preschool's license and inspection history?

Florida DCF's public provider search (caressearch.myflfamilies.com) shows every licensed facility's license number, capacity, status, and inspection reports. Some faith-based programs operate license-exempt under Florida law, which is a recognized category — ask those programs about their accreditation instead.
