St. Johns County: Ponte Vedra Beach to Matanzas

Ponte Vedra Beach has 14 county walkovers along the north end of Ponte Vedra Boulevard and none of them has parking; parking on the boulevard’s right-of-way is restricted, so those walkovers serve the people who live within walking or biking distance. The public lots begin at Mickler’s Landing. South of it, the Guana reserve runs beach lots along the boulevard for a small fee, and South Ponte Vedra, Vilano Beach, St. Augustine Beach, Butler Beach and Crescent Beach each have county parks with restrooms.

Beach driving runs from Vilano Beach to Crescent Beach at the county’s ramps. A pass is required from March 1 through September 30; the speed limit on the sand is 10 mph, there is no driving in Anastasia State Park or on the Fort Matanzas beach, and from May through October the county closes its beach gates at night for sea turtle season. The county’s beach-access page carries the current pass prices.

Who else uses this beach

Sea turtles, May 1 to October 31

Loggerheads, greens and a few leatherbacks nest from Amelia Island to Matanzas. Fill holes, take your gear home at night and keep lights off the sand.

Nests and rules, town by town →

Right whales, mid-November to mid-April

This coast is their calving ground. In March 2026 a mother and calf were seen about a quarter mile off Crescent Beach. Federal law keeps every vessel, surfboard, kayak and paddleboard 500 yards away.

Dolphins, all year

Bottlenose dolphins work the surf, the inlets and the Intracoastal. Feeding or harassing them is illegal under the Marine Mammal Protection Act; NOAA asks for 50 yards.

Shells and shark teeth

Empty shells and fossil shark teeth are yours on the open beaches. State parks allow them below the dunes; Fort Matanzas allows neither.

The part nobody tells you: public sand, private paths

The wet sand below the mean high-water line belongs to the public under the Florida Constitution; on renourished beaches the line is a recorded erosion control line. The dry sand above it is generally private unless a local customary-use rule or an easement says otherwise.

The walkways between beach houses are where people get it wrong. Many are private easements that belong to the lots in a subdivision, kept up by an HOA, and some are easy to miss behind the landscaping. Using one without a right to it can be trespass once it is posted. Some older plats did dedicate their walkways to public use, and the county’s records say so, but the reliable way to the sand is a public access on this map. If you are buying a home for its walkway, the plat and the title commitment are what prove it. Homes a short walk from a public access →

This is the work I do every week. Want to live where you can walk to the sand? Tell me the stretch of beach. I'll show you which streets have a public access or a deeded walkway, and what the homes there cost.

Common questions

Where can I park for the beach in Ponte Vedra Beach?

Mickler's Landing Beachfront Park, with about 202 spaces, restrooms and showers, is the main public lot. South of it, the Guana Tolomato Matanzas Research Reserve runs beach lots along Ponte Vedra Boulevard for a small per-vehicle fee. The 14 county walkovers on the north end of Ponte Vedra Boulevard have no parking, and parking on the boulevard's right-of-way is restricted.

Can you drive on the beach near St. Augustine?

Yes, at the county ramps from Vilano Beach south to Crescent Beach. A beach driving pass is required from March 1 through September 30, the speed limit on the sand is 10 mph, and there is no driving in Anastasia State Park or on the Fort Matanzas beach. During sea turtle season, May through October, the county closes its beach gates at night.

Is beach parking free in Jacksonville Beach?

Most street-end accesses are free. In season, March to November, Jacksonville Beach charges for parking in its downtown and pier lots and on a few street ends near them, with city residents exempt. Atlantic Beach charges at its 18th and 19th Street lots on weekends from March to September, and Neptune Beach meters the Town Center.

Can you drive on the beach on Amelia Island?

Seaside Park in Fernandina Beach has a drive-on ramp open to any four-wheel-drive vehicle. The county ramps on the south end (Peters Point, Scott Road and Lewis Street) are limited to Nassau County residents and property owners under the county’s 2025 beach ordinance.

Can I use a private beach walkway if it isn’t marked?

Not as a rule. A deeded or HOA beach walkway is usually a private easement for the lots it serves, and using one without a right to can be trespass once it is posted. The public beach is the wet sand below the mean high-water line; to reach it, use a public access.

Looking for a home near the beach?
