Charter Schools in Jacksonville

Duval County has 42 charter schools on the state’s list this year. Two pairs share a campus, so the 40 below are grouped by part of town, from Waldorf-inspired and classical academies to STEM and language programs, with the grades, busing and application details each school publishes.

How charter enrollment works in Florida

  • Every Florida charter school is a public school. It cannot charge tuition or registration fees beyond what other public schools charge.
  • A charter has no attendance zone. Buying a home next door does not hold a seat: when a grade gets more timely applications than it has room for, the law requires a random lottery.
  • The law lets a charter give preference to some applicants, such as siblings of current students and children of its employees and board members. Each school publishes its own list.
  • Busing is up to each school. It can contract buses or rely on parents, so many run a car line. Where a school states its busing, it is shown below.

Questions buyers ask

Are charter schools in Jacksonville free?

Yes. Florida law makes every charter school a public school, and a charter cannot charge tuition or registration fees beyond what other public schools charge. Some run tuition-based programs alongside the charter, such as early learning classes; those sit outside it.

Does buying a home near a charter school get my child a seat?

No. A charter school has no attendance zone. When a grade gets more timely applications than seats, the law requires a random lottery, after any preferences the school publishes (siblings and employees’ children are common). The home’s address still sets its zoned district school, which Duval County Public Schools’ locator shows for any address.

When do Jacksonville charter schools take applications?

Each school sets its own window. The Charter Schools USA campuses (Baymeadows, Scholars Academy, Coastal, Flagler Center, Mandarin, Southside and Westside) list November 3 to December 4, 2026 for the 2027–28 year. Several others opened theirs in January or February last year. Check each school’s enrollment page in the fall.

Do charter schools in Duval County provide buses?

Some do. KIPP Jacksonville, BridgePrep Academy and Duval Charter Scholars Academy state that they run bus service, and Somerset takes bus requests. Most Charter Schools USA campuses describe themselves as car-line schools. Florida law lets a charter arrange transportation through contracts or parents.

Did any Jacksonville charter schools close recently?

San Jose Early College at Cecil closed on June 30, 2026, according to the state list and the school network. Harbour Pointe Preparatory Academy on the Northside opened in August 2026.
