The map

I’m Krista Fracke, and if you own a boat, the first question about a house is how far it is to the water. This is the answer for everyone without a dock: every public ramp, sized by its trailer parking. The biggest lot is Dee Dee Bartels Public Boat Ramp, with about 93 trailer spaces. Tap a ramp, or any ramp name below, for its lanes, parking, fee and directions.

Before you launch

  • Florida has no boating license, but anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 needs a boater education ID card to run 10 horsepower or more (FWC).
  • Motorized boats are registered with the county tax collector; canoes and kayaks without a motor are not.
  • Duval County’s manatee protection zones cover the St. Johns River, its creeks and the Intracoastal, most at slow speed all year. FWC publishes the zone maps.
  • Offshore from mid-November to mid-April, right whales calve along this coast; federal law keeps every boat 500 yards away.
  • Water skiing and tubing need an observer aboard or a wide-angle mirror, and both stop half an hour after sunset.

The part nobody tells you: the trailer has to live somewhere

A free ramp ten minutes away is only free if the boat can sit in your driveway, and in most deed-restricted neighborhoods it can’t. Many HOAs bar boats and trailers from driveways and streets, some allow them behind a fence or in the garage, and a few have a community storage lot with a waiting list. Read the declaration before you buy; I’ve written up how the parking rules work here.

A private dock changes the math the other way. An existing dock usually transfers with the house, but building or enlarging one runs through state submerged-lands rules, an Army Corps permit and sometimes the HOA, and none of that is in the listing photos. Ask for the permits before you offer.

Right now FWC lists 3 of these ramps as closed or limited: St Johns Marina (Downtown Jacksonville); McCue Park and Boat Ramp; Goffinsville Nassau River Park and Boat Ramp.

This is the work I do every week. Want the boat in the backyard instead of on a trailer? Tell me where you launch now. I'll find homes with a deep-water dock on the same water, and check the dock permits before you offer.

Common questions

How many public boat ramps are there around Jacksonville and St. Augustine?

FWC’s ramp inventory lists 64 public trailer ramps in Nassau, Duval and St. Johns counties (32 in Duval, 21 in St. Johns, 11 in Nassau), 53 of the open ones with no launch fee recorded. Another 63 public sites are hand launches for kayaks, canoes and paddleboards.

Do I need a boating license in Florida?

Florida has no boating license, but anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 who operates a boat of 10 horsepower or more must carry a boater safety education ID card from an approved course. Motorized boats must be registered with the county tax collector.

Are there manatee speed zones near Jacksonville boat ramps?

Yes. Duval County’s manatee protection rule (68C-22.027) sets slow-speed and other zones across the St. Johns River, its creeks and the Intracoastal, most of them in effect all year. FWC publishes the zone maps; the signs on the water are the rule.

Which boat ramps charge a fee?

Most county and city ramps here record no fee. Fees in FWC’s inventory are mostly at the parks and fish camps: Big Talbot Island State Park Boat Ramp ($4 per vehicle), Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park Fish Management Area – Primitive Boat Ramp ($5 daily), Egans Creek Marina Inc ($5 daily), GTM Guana River Dam Recreation Area – Lake Access Ramp (10 HP Max) ($3 per vehicle).

Ramp data from FWC’s Florida Boat Ramp Inventory, read October 17, 2026. FWC calls the inventory preliminary and county staff update it; check the ramp’s own page or the posted signs before you tow.

Boat first, house second?

Tell me your boat and your water. I’ll send the homes that fit both, with the dock or the storage sorted out.
