Has a hurricane ever hit Jacksonville? Once. Here’s the whole story.

In records going back to 1851, exactly one hurricane has made landfall on the Northeast Florida coast — Dora, 1964. Storms brush or affect the area about every two years, and the two worst modern events never made landfall here at all. Seventy years of storms, what each one actually did, and why this coastline’s luck is geography rather than magic — with the honest caveats a buyer should hear.

The short answer, with numbers

One direct hurricane landfall on this coast in the entire record: Hurricane Dora, September 1964, a strong Category 2 (~110 mph) ashore near St. Augustine. Tracking datasets that count every brush put a named system near Jacksonville roughly every two years, and hurricane-force conditions roughly once a decade (HurricaneCity’s 150-year track dataset — a brush-radius count, not landfalls). The National Hurricane Center’s return-period climatology shows this stretch of coast with among the longest hurricane return intervals in Florida.

And the caveat that keeps this page honest: the region’s two defining modern storm events — Matthew 2016 and Irma 2017 — both happened without a landfall here. Low strike frequency has never meant low water.

Why storms usually miss — the geography

Two mechanisms do the work. First, latitude-30 recurvature: by the time Atlantic hurricanes reach Jacksonville’s latitude, the steering currents around the Bermuda High typically bend them north and then northeast — so storms arrive traveling parallel to our coast rather than into it. Second, the coastline itself: Northeast Florida sits at the southern end of the South Atlantic Bight, the long concave curve of coast running up through Georgia — and Jacksonville actually lies farther west than nearly any city on the eastern seaboard, tucked away from the typical recurving track.

The same geometry has a dark side: that shallow, concave shelf amplifies storm surge when a storm does arrive. The coastline deflects tracks; it does not deflect water. Dora’s ten-foot tides and Matthew’s seven-foot surge into St. Augustine are the proof.

And this region carries a risk most hurricane maps miss entirely: the St. Johns River flows north, flat and slow, emptying through one narrow mouth at Mayport. Sustained onshore winds can stall or reverse it. In Irma, the NHC’s own report documents ocean water shoved upstream — downtown salinity spiked to near-seawater — followed by the rainfall crest six hours later. That “two-punch” compound flood is why San Marco and Riverside flood from the river, miles from any beach.

Seventy years of storms, storm by storm

Every named storm since 1956 with meaningful Northeast Florida impact. Figures come from National Hurricane Center reports, NWS Jacksonville post-storm summaries, St. Johns County Emergency Management, and FDEP — the sourcing a claim like “only one landfall since 1851” deserves.

Riverine Jacksonville: San Marco, Riverside, downtown

Jacksonville’s real storm risk is the river, not the beach. The bookends are Dora 1964 — the St. Johns six feet above high tide into downtown and Ortega — and Irma 2017, the worst river flooding in the city’s modern history, with water five feet deep in streets and record stages at the downtown and Buckman gauges. Even Milton 2024, exiting the coast a hundred miles south, pushed the downtown river gauge to moderate flood stage. This is why the counties’ evacuation schemes include river-flood zones, and why a San Marco address can carry a more urgent flood conversation than an oceanfront one.

The Jacksonville Beaches: a dune and erosion story

Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Jacksonville Beach sit on a dune ridge with genuinely decent elevation — their storm story is the dune line itself. Dora destroyed dozens of beachfront homes; Floyd took 140 feet of the pier and 25–30 feet of dune at Fort George Inlet (FDEP’s post-storm survey); Matthew broke the rebuilt pier again and swept dunes flat in stretches. Duval County carries more than ten miles of critically eroded shoreline on the state’s books. For a beach-side purchase, the operative questions are dune integrity, construction year against the wind code, and evacuation logistics — a different checklist from the river side’s.

Ponte Vedra Beach and the dune line south

Ponte Vedra’s primary dune is tall — and thin, with the Guana lowlands behind it. The recent record is an erosion story more than a wind story: Ian gnawed the dune in 2022, and Nicole finished the job six weeks later — A1A washed out in South Ponte Vedra, a road collapse at Vilano, oceanfront homes left at the edge of an erosion scarp. St. Johns County leads the state in critically eroded miles, and Milton’s strongest verified Northeast Florida gust (70 mph) was recorded at a Ponte Vedra fire station. St. Augustine: the repeat-flood capital

St. Augustine is where the region’s water risk concentrates: a low, historic bayfront city with the Matanzas River funneling surge straight into its oldest blocks. Davis Shores flooded in Matthew (a roughly seven-foot surge), flooded again in Irma a year later, and took water again in Dorian, Ian, and Nicole. Dora’s 1964 landfall came ashore essentially here. Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach

A barrier-island harbor town at the top of the region, where the Amelia River waterfront is the exposure: Matthew was the worst modern event — a near-seven-foot storm surge at the Fernandina gauge, three to five feet of inundation across low-lying Nassau County, the marina and the Fort Clinch pier wrecked — with Irma damaging the rebuilt oceanside pier a year later and Ian hitting the marina again. The island’s position deepest inside the Georgia Bight’s curve is both its track protection and its surge amplifier.

The part nobody tells you

Florida law does not require sellers to disclose that a home has flooded before. The house that took water in Irma can be sold to you without a word about it. Has a hurricane ever hit Jacksonville directly?

Exactly one in the record books, which go back to 1851: Hurricane Dora, September 1964, a strong Category 2 that came ashore near St. Augustine and put the St. Johns River six feet above high tide into downtown Jacksonville. Every other hurricane impact here — Matthew, Irma, Dorian — came from storms that never made landfall on this coast. That is a genuinely unusual record for a Florida coastline, and the “why” is geography, explained above.

Is Northeast Florida safer from hurricanes than South Florida?

The historical strike record is meaningfully quieter — one direct hurricane landfall here since 1851, versus dozens across South Florida — because storms at this latitude typically curve northeast and run parallel to our coast rather than into it. But “quieter” is not “safe”: Matthew missed by ~30–40 miles offshore as a Category 3, Irma flooded Jacksonville from 100 miles inland, and the same coastal geometry that deflects tracks amplifies storm surge when one does arrive. The honest framing is lower strike frequency, real water risk.

When was the last hurricane to hit St. Augustine?

The last landfall was Dora in 1964 — but landfall is the wrong test for St. Augustine, which has flooded repeatedly from storms that never touched the coast: Matthew (2016) drove roughly seven feet of surge into Davis Shores, Irma (2017) flooded the same neighborhoods a year later, and Dorian, Ian, and Nicole each put water into the low parts of the city. Do I need flood insurance if I’m not in a flood zone?

Lenders won’t require it outside the high-risk zones — but a large share of flood claims nationally come from properties outside those zones, and this region’s signature flood events (Irma’s river flooding, Fay’s rainfall) reached plenty of Zone X addresses. Duval and St. Johns counties both use lettered zones A–F: A is the most surge-vulnerable (oceanfront and river/Intracoastal edges) and the letters step inland — and the schemes include river-flood zones along the St. Johns, not just beach zones.
