If you find yourself as an empty-nester or even in a tight financial situation, downsizing your Jacksonville home may be the solution. However, effectively downsizing is going to require some tough decisions, hard work, and plenty of time. Here are five tricks to make the process a little smoother.
1. Determine Your Needs
Before you begin throwing items away, determine what you absolutely need in your new home. For example, if you are moving from a six-bedroom home to a three-bedroom home, you need to keep a minimum of three bedroom sets. If you are moving to a home with a much smaller dining room, you may need to sell your current dining room table and purchase a table that better fits the new space.
2. Focus on One Room at a Time
As you begin to declutter and purge items from your home, the task can seem overwhelming. To make it a little less daunting, focus on only one room at a time. If time allows, spend two or three days on that one area. Go through every shelf and drawer and purge items that you don’t need, haven’t used, or could sell and make some additional money.
3. Cast Emotions Aside
You may be tempted to hang onto items thinking you will use them again, pieces of clothing that you hope will fit after your next diet, or mementos that remind you of experiences years ago, but this won’t help your downsizing efforts. Cast your emotions aside when purging items and only take the things that you use regularly, seasonally, or contain significant sentimental value.
4. Avoid Duplicates
You can save a significant amount of space by removing duplicates from your home. For example, if you have two large desks in your home, determine which desk will fit best in your new home and sell the other. This will save you a significant amount of space with little effort. Even purging small items such as multiple blenders and tennis shoes can save a significant amount of cupboard and closet space.
5. Stay Organized
Downsizing your home can become a large mess if you don’t take the time to do it properly. Stay organized by keeping several large boxes in each room. Designate one box for items you wish to sell, items to throw away, items to donate, and items to keep. Once you have completed a room, take care of the items in each box and begin again.
