While Jacksonville has tons to do, sometimes you want to venture a little further from home. We are lucky here in Jacksonville to have so many great attractions within a few hours’ drive. If you are a resident or a visitor of Jacksonville, you’ll want to take note of these four great road trips to be had.
Everyone’s heard of Daytona Beach and that’s because it is a must-see for anyone in the state of Florida. Just a 1.5 hour drive from Jacksonville, it is here that you’ll take part in their very viable cultural and culinary attractions. They’ve got 23 miles of coastline, that make it an ideal spot for families, couples and singles. Also known as the world’s most famous beach, it is great for any budget, with everything from budget motels to ritzy hotels and all accommodations in between. You of course don’t want to miss the Daytona International Speedway, with motorsport races and so much more.
Taking a turn away from the glitz and glam of Daytona Beach, come to Fernandina Beach, where you’ll find the oldest town in Florida. With beautifully restored downtown areas featuring delicious restaurants and unique shops, your walk through Fernandina Beach will feature historic buildings and a beautiful waterfront. You also won’t want to miss Amelia Island and the welcome centre is a welcoming place to be! The drive will take you less than an hour, so you can make this a short day trip.
Located in Gainesville, just a 1.5 hour drive from Jax, the Florida Museum of Natural History is a must-visit spot in Florida. It is located on the University of Florida campus and has millions of specimens and artifacts. Researchers there put on public lectures and children’s programs so everyone can learn about Florida’s great natural history, including information about sharks, birds, tropical flowers and Florida’s threatened species. Their many events and exhibits will delight you and make it well worth the drive.
Get on the road for less than an hour to visit the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park. Over 100 years old, this fun spot is the world’s largest alligator farm. Working to ensure the survival of species in their collection, this zoological park cares about the many reptiles, mammals and birds in their care. They have an extensive education program for kids as well as adults. As for the fun, check out Crocodile Crossing, a treetop trek with aerial obstacles and zip line.
